Yves Gangloff is not only a winemaker but also a passionate guitar player and collector, indulging in jazz, blues, and rock. His brother Pierre, an accomplished painter, designs the voluptuous labels for their wines. This artistic lineage within the family allows them to weave a tapestry where nature, music, and art intertwine, creating a unique healing aesthetic in the vineyard. Meanwhile, his daughter Elsa manages the administrative side of the business.

Condrieu 2016

“Limpid gold. Potent, mineral-accented orchard and pit fruit and violet qualities on the perfumed nose. Silky and deeply concentrated in style, offering palate-staining white peach, pear nectar and tangerine flavors that display excellent clarity and back-end energy. The strikingly long, focused finish shows wonderful focus and thrust and juicy pit fruit character."


Fans of plush white Rhône wines have been onto Gangloff for some time now, so much so that his opulent yet well-structured Condrieu, in particular, has become extremely hard to find. Yves Gangloff told me that it basically sells out before it's even released, as long-time consumers, restaurants and importers have standing orders, making the wine, which is sourced from the 1.7 hectares that he owns at Côte Bonnette and Chéry, a highly allocated bottling. Gangloff's recent vintages of Condieu have been uniformly superb and this 2016 is probably the best version of that wine that l've ever had from him. I just wish there were more of it.

“Pale gold. Intense, mineral-accented scents of fresh pear, nectarine and violet are lifted by a bright citrus pith nuance. Silky and tightly focused on entry, then deeper in the midpalate, offering sappy orchard and pit fruit and Meyer lemon flavors and a hint of honeysuckle. Closes with impressive, mineral-tinged persistence, repeating florality and a repeating pear note."

Condrieu 2019

“Light, green-tinged yellow. A powerful scented bouquet evokes violet, ripe citrus and orchard fruits, which are complicated by hints of dusty minerals and saffron. Juicy and concentrated on the palate, offering densely packed pear nectar, orange pith and honeysuckle flavors that show outstanding clarity and mineral lift. The floral and mineral notes persist on the incisive finish, which hangs on with superb tenacity."


Although the white wines here are made in painfully small quantity, Yves Gangloff has a soft spot for them. "It's my village, after all," he noted. The style at this address leans toward opulence, especially in 2018 and 2017 more than usual. The 2017s in particular, should be highly enjoyable in their youth while the 2018s, still pretty irresistible now, will likely have an edge when it comes to aging. In 2019 the fruit had higher acidity levels, Gangloff told me,"even if the wines are also on the rich side as well.

Story of Gangloff

In the heart of the Rhône Valley, a young Yves Gangloff set off to visit his brother Pierre, unaware that this trip would change his life forever...


It was here, amidst the sun-kissed vineyards, that he met Mathilde, a connection so profound that he decided to stay.

Starting as a humble laborer at Delas, Yves discovered a passion for winemaking that would soon consume him. In 1982, the couple took a bold step, purchasing their first hectare of vines, dreaming of a legacy. But fate had other plans; in 1987, their negociant suddenly went bankrupt, leaving them with a harvest and no one to sell it to. 


Faced with this daunting challenge, Yves and Mathilde rolled up their sleeves and dived into the art of winemaking. Their perseverance transformed adversity into opportunity, and by the mid-1990s, Yves had blossomed into a celebrated superstar of the region, turning their story of love and resilience into a remarkable legacy in the world of wine.
