Tasting Note

Burghound 95 points,   October 2021

A discreet, even timid nose speaks of markedly cool, airy and admirably pure aromas of high-toned floral wisps, iodine and plenty of oyster shell and tidal pool nuances that are trimmed in just enough wood to mention. The racy, mineral-driven and ultra-refined middle weight flavors possess the finest and most delicate texture in the entire range, all wrapped in a strikingly long and strikingly layered finale. This is textbook MdT and a genuine knockout.

*Outstanding*

Winemaking Winery

The vineyard of Montée de Tonnerre is located on the same south-facing slope as the grand crus.

This Montée de Tonnerre is made from blending grapes from 1.8 hectares of vines in the lieu-dit of Chapelot and 1.2 hectares of vines in the cooler, racier lieu-dit of Pied d’Aloup.

In big vintages, a separate bottling of Chapelot is produced in addition to the regular cuvee of Montée de Tonnerre

Winery

The domaine was created in 1948, when Francois Raveneau consolidated his holdings with his wifes familys vineyard parcels. Though his father had spent years selling off prime parcels, Francois was doing his best to bring new ones back into the hands of the domaine.

Francois Raveneau, who died in 2000 and whose wife was a Dauvissat, assembled a domaine boasting one breathtaking parcel after another. Today, Francois sons, Bernard and his daughther Isabelle and Jean Marie and his son Maxime, run the domaine, yet stay true to Francois's philosophy in both the vineyards and the cellar.

The wines are made in the most natural way possible. Traditionally the domaine use to vinify its 8ha in smaller oak barriques and pieces, but since 2018 there was a change to large oak barrels.
