Tasting Note

Wine Advocate 91,
Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Aromas of sweet cherries, raspberries, berry fruit liqueur, licorice and spices introduce the 2019 Alter Ego de Palmer, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping wine with lively acids, melting tannins and a lavish core of ripe, creamy fruit. It's more immediate than the more muscular, powerful grand vin. Drink Date: 2021 - 2039

Vinous 94, Neal Martin

The 2019 Alter Ego de Palmer is delineated and focused on the nose with blackberry, cedar and graphite scents. More austere yet still complex and one with the most cerebral Margaux aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, quite saline and peppery, firm and insistent grip with quiet assertive tannins on the finish. A Margaux that should be given a long-term lease in your cellar.

James Suckling 96

Intense aromas of blackcurrants, cedar and ripe tobacco with hints of violets, following through to a full-bodied palate with extremely refined tannins that are well-integrated into the wine and are long and subtle at the finish. Such precision and harmony with structure. From biodynamically grown grapes. Best after 2023.

Winemaking

Vinification is carried out in thermoregulated stainless steel vats. Then, the wines are aged for a period of 20 months in oak barrels, 50 to 60% of which are new. 2nd wine of Château Palmer, 3rd Grand Cru Classé

Winery

The 66 hectare Bordeaux vineyard of Chateau Palmer, Third Growth, is planted to 47% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot with vines that average 38 years of age.

The vat rooms and chai of Chateau Palmer were entirely refurbished in 1995. Since then, they have added 42 temperature-controlled, conical-shaped, stainless steel vats that were designed to provide the vinification on a parcel by parcel basis, allowing for much more precision in the winemaking.
